Possessed by the devil: Hitler, Stalin... and Potter

Pope Benedict XVI's senior exorcist claims the Harry Potter books contain innumerable positive references to magic, "the satanic art."

"Behind Harry Potter hides the signature of the king of the darkness, the devil," he told Vatican Radio. And according to the Daily Mail newspaper in London, he added that the books attempt to make a false distinction between black and white magic, when in fact, the distinction "does not exist, because magic is always a turn to the devil."

All I have to say is... he's an exorcist - what did you expect him to say?

Good literature has always challenged religious dogma.

One memorable example for me is a point in Huck Finn when Huck knows that he has to turn Jim, the run away-slave Huck has been traveling with, in to the law. He has learned that his immortal soul is in peril if he doesn't turn in a run-away slave. Huck finally resolves: "Well then I'll just go to hell." It inspires me that humanity can show through learned racial prejudices and bigotry. I have hope in this fact that one day people will see through all their Bible-thumping brimstone and accept homosexuals as people deserving of equal rights.

To the Pope and the chief exorcist of the Catholic church I would suggest another work of literature, Lord of the Flies, where the "beast" is simply in the imagination of small boys.

I love the Harry Potter books. J.K. Rowling did a good thing when she wrote them. I don't understand anyone who thinks they are evil. Geoffrey and I have listened to all seven books on tape and have started over again. I think Harry Potter and his friends are the most loveable characters in literature today. They appeal to all age groups. So, to those who think these books are a threat to righteousness, I say, "Get a life."
