The Shakespearean Festival

Well, Mom and I just got back from the Shakespearean Festival today. We had so much fun! The first night we went and saw Antony and Cleopatra. It was excellent. The only complaint that we had was that Antony really needed to speak up so that we could hear him better. Mom had never read the play, so half the time she didn't know what was happening because she couldn't hear him. Cleopatra was so funny. One of my favorite parts of hers was when she almost killed the messenger for telling her that Antony got re-married. Mom and I were both really impressed with the actor that played Caesar as well. He was very convincing. Either he played Caesar exactly as I pictured him, or I think I have seen him somewhere before because I swear I know him...

The next day we saw the Merry Wives of Windsor. It was so funny and the acting again was amazing! Better yet, half of the people that were in it had been in the play we had seen the night before. We couldn't believe it! They were so good. Not only were they convincing in the roles they were playing, but they were completely different from the ones the night before. Caesar, from the night before, was in this play too. He had a completely different accent that he didn't loose throughout the entire play. I was very impressed. We laughed through the entire thing.

That night, we saw Hamlet. It was really good and everyone in it did an excellent job. Hamlet was amazing and Ophellia was very convincing being crazy. Allison's favorite scene is the one where the Player King is performing, and who else is playing the Player King, but Caesar! He was so good at it that Allison didn't even realize that it was the same person until I pointed it out to her. The entire play was so good. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested.

After the play, I saw Caesar again! I ran after him to tell him that I thought he was amazing. Allison was disappointed that I didn't get his number or give him mine. He was really nice though. He said that I had made his weekend.

All in all, we had a great time. I am only sorry that more of you hadn't come with us. You missed out!

I am really jealous. Sounds like a great time. Hamlet must have been somthing else. It's wonderful on the stage.

Hamlet was definately the best of the 3 plays this time. Brian Vaughn has been my favorite actor in the festival the last few years, and he was very compelling as Hamlet. I was thrilled that the director chose to leave in all of Act II scene ii, which is my favorite scene--especially the part of the Player King's monologue about Priam and Hecuba, and Hamlet's soliloquy, "Oh what a rogue and a peasant slave am I...." I've never seen a production of Hamlet that left it in--except for Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, which I believe, for better or fore worse, enveloped the play in its entirety.
