Father Dante

Yesterday I had the day off so I was at home with all of the kitties. At one point in the day, all five kitties were in the driveway. Mael had started a fight with Scout, so Dante walked up to Mael and pawed his face. Mael then walked off and sat a little ways away. I think that was Dante's way of breaking up the fight since he is declawed and can't do much damage. However, if Dante is the one protecting all of the kitties, I hope that whoever hurt Mael's tail got his ass kicked. I can hear Dante saying, "Kitties, be nice to each other..."

Isn't Dante great? We miss him a lot, but I'm glad to know he's getting along so well at the Hanna house.

Dante pawing Mael on the face was a way of diffusing the situation--its called a "repair attempt." He tried it a lot when Moose was mad too, but usually just made Moose even madder--kind of like when I used to pet Geoffrey down the middle of the face and say, "Quiet, little one." when he was all worked up--it usually just got him even more worked up. =)

Dante does fit right in. He's the only one of the cats that Mael considers his equal. I think Mael is still the Supreme Dictator, Dante is Vice President (because he still thinks this is a democracy), Zephyr and Dakota are the silent majority and Scout is the picked-on outcast.
