Organized Chaos

Downtown Salt Lake has been a mess the last few days. On 4th South and State St. all of the Hispanic people in the nearby area have been protesting the immigration laws. I couldn't beleieve how many people were there. And before that, while I was working up the street, people kept coming in and telling us that we should go and join the protest. I thought that it was just a Sunday thing, but there was still people there today. And any Hispanic people you see walking in the downtown area is carrying an American flag...

I heard on the radio today that yesterday's protest was the biggest protest Utah has seen since the Vietnam War, and the amazing thing about it was how peacefully it went. Even though Minutemen had also formed their own group and were yelling things at these people like, "We don't need you here! Just go home!" The whole thing was still pulled off peacefully without any big problems. Sounds pretty cool for me.
Plus, I also heard someone say that this really isn't an issue of Hispanics, but an issue of minimum wage. I thought that was an interesting way of looking at it as well. But really, I don't know what the answer is.

The hispanics are protesting because the Republicans want to throw them in jail and deport them. They are trying to pass laws to that purpose in congress. Republicans are also trying to build a wall between Texas and Mexico. How stupid can you be! We are seeing a new civil rights movement across the country, this time for undocumented workers. It's neat to watch.
