A Year Ago Today...

A year ago today my sister Chelsee Hanna gave me a gift that I can't ever try to repay when she donated a kidney to me. My sister never wavered throughout the whole process, even though the thought of the surgery was a scary prospect for her. Her kindness and bravery changed my life. All I can say is she is my hero. I love you Chelsee.

This made me tear up when I read it, and I wanted to share it with everyone. I love you so much Wesley!! If I had to do it all again, I would. I love seeing the amazing life that you have and how happy you are. I am so grateful that we are both doing so well after the surgery! What great little kidneys I have. Love you!

I was at the hospital before, during and after this surgery, and the thing that struck me the most is how beautiful Chelsee looked immediately after the transplant. Yes, she was in pain and yes, she was drugged, but there was on her face what I can only describe as a glow. Maybe it was a glow of love or a glow of self-empowerment and self-esteem at realizing that she had gone through with something that had terrified her. Maybe it was a glow of peace in knowing that she had saved a life. But whatever the reason, she had never been more beautiful, and she remains beautiful to all of us in the family who loved Wesley and would have given him a kidney ourselves, if we had only been the right blood type or old enough or young enough. The thing that made me the happiest in the first few hours after the transplant was Wesley describing how a fog had lifted from his mind, which he had not realized was there until it was gone. He could tell right away that the new kidney was filtering all the toxins from his body that had been accumulating over the months of dialysis. Medical science is wonderful and I will be ever grateful to the doctors and the team of others who made it possible for Chelsee to give and Wesley to receive this invaluable gift, which has changed and saved Wesley's life and made Chelsee so beautiful in her mother's eyes.

I agree with Mom. :) Chelsee has given an amazing gift that was uniquely her own and none of us can say we've been trhough what she's been trhough. I think the experience changed her, and not necessarily made her better since she's always been amazing, but she definitely has that glow Mom described. :)
